Mega Marathon 2020

The curtain has come down on our Mega Marathon Fundraiser event! The week of December 14th-18th 2020 will live long in our memories. Every pupil & staff member completed various distances of 5km right up to & including a full marathon. What started out as a fundraiser has become much more. Living through a pandemic, we chose to a fundraiser that would support our wellbeing as well as becoming healthier & thus the idea was born! Every pupil ran a “mini marathon in a month” with many senior classes completing a full marathon. Each pupil completed their last kilometre to a hero’s welcome and were awarded their medals by their peers. Indeed it was a very special moment when 6th Class awarded medals to Junior Infants, also marking the first time they have met this year..

Staff too, played their part! Every staff member participated in the event setting their own personal targets which they met or achieved personal bests. Teachers Aoife Percy, Carol Hassett & Niamh Ryan decided to run a full marathon of 26.1 miles/42km! 12 weeks ago, they planned a tough schedule to get themselves marathon-ready! Mr Cillian Roche & Ms Elaine Connolly kicked off the event by running 10km and thus started a series of events! On Friday morning, Ms Edel Groome & Mr Paul Hanley set off on their maiden 21km -half marathon voyage, followed by the 3 girls who began their 42km run.

We would like to extend our thanks to everyone who supported & helped the school with this event. You know who you are! We have been humbled by the generosity of everyone  who donated online, through sponsor cards or called to the school door. Each donation is very much appreciated & will be put towards two very worthy causes. A donation will be given to the wonderful “Jack & Jill Foundation” as well as buying essential equipment to kit out the school’s sensory area. Every pupil will benefit from this area and particularly pupils who have added sensory challenges. It will provide a quiet space when needed.

As we head towards a new year, we are very proud of our pupils, whose resilience to Covid 19 / new school routines has been remarkable.  We look forward to 2021 and a continuation of prioritising our wellbeing by keeping up our daily runs. That’s for staff too!!
