We love Free Writing in Junior Infants!
Happy New Year!
We have all settled back into school and we are working like busy bees! We are busy learning how to write our letters this term. We have learned how to form c, o, a and d so far and will continue to learn 3 new letters every week.. We need to remember to sit beautifully to write beautifully! Teacher told us all about vowels and how important they are. Every word has a vowel! We are continuing our numbers and this week, we are moving on to number 4. We have been busy looking at the weather forecast and we are learning all about rain. According to the weather forecast snow is expected on Saturday so we are keeping our fingers crossed! In Art, we are learning about colours, especially Primary colours. We did an experiment with milk, food colouring and washing up liquid and we saw the colours exploding!! It was very exciting!
Champions in the making!!
Our superstars at soccer and Irish Dancing respectively!
We are continuing to work really hard in our class! We have settled in easily after our mid-term break. We needed a rest but now we are ready to work hard again! We love reading our word lists and learning our new sounds. Some sounds are tricky but we are getting the hang of them. Teacher keeps on reminding us of the rule 'when 2 vowels go walking, the first does the talking'. We learned a really cool song all about Materials! We love singing it ,especially the part ' you wouldn't wear paper clothes in the rain'! We have been learning all about our 5 senses! Last week, we explored our sense of taste and got to taste different foods. We talked about our taste buds and how they send messages to our brain telling our brain if we like food or not. The sweet food was definitely our favourite! This week we learned about our sense of sight and some of us put on blindfolds and tried to walk around the classroom. We found it really difficult and had to use our sense of touch to guide us. In maths, we are learning about patterns and also about 2D shapes. We love making our own patterns are we are going to print patterns in Art using potatoes.
We have just started rehearsing our school nativity, Born in a Barn. Your child will tell you the part they are playing so that you can get their costume ready....something simple. We have lots of costumes in school aswell so please ask me if you are finding it difficult.

Guard Fiona showing us her uniform
Once again, a hectic week in Juniors! We had a real life artist in our class last Thursday morning. We made a movie with worms made from play-doh. This week we are making a movie with real worms! We went on a trip to the Garda station on Friday. The guard showed us the cells and took our fingerprints. She gave us reflector jackets and lollipops. We really had a great time! We've been busy learning all about babies. We have grown up and changed so much - we can run, skip, hop etc!! We read a story all about Carol and a Mouse. She met a mouse in a bin who was stocking up on food for the winter. We love learning about hedgehogs and squirrels and all about Autumn! We are learning so many sounds and now we can read lots of words! We know which sets have more/less in maths and we dont even count!! We went to the library today . Some of us forgot our books so we couldnt get new ones. Hopefully, we will remember to bring them next week.
Trying on the uniform!

Our News Wednesday 1st October
We are learning all about Autumn in our classroom this week. We went on a nature trail to the park. We saw Horse Chestnut trees and we collected plenty of conkers. We also collected acorns from the Oak tree but don't worry, we left enough for the hedgehogs and squirrels! They are busy getting ready to hibernate. Teacher told us that hedgehogs have about 5000 spines and that each spine lasts about a year before it falls out. Hedgehog are lucky because when a spine falls out, a new one grows....not like some of our daddys' hair!! We also hunted for woodlice. We were very careful not to hurt them when we were investigating.
We had great fun learning about percussion instruments. We played triangles, castanets, tambours, tambourines, shakers and lots more!
Our News Wednesday 24th September
We had another busy week in Junior Infants!! We are very busy learning our sounds and reading. We are getting very good at 'sounding out'! We learned the rhyme ‘Ickle Ockle’ and we love clapping when we are singing it. We are very busy sorting sets in Maths and we are learning how to sort for different things like colour and shape.
In Art this week, teacher took a ‘line for a walk’ and we painted our pictures all different colours. Teacher showed us how to wash and dry our paintbrushes each time we use a new colour so that we don’t mix the colours. In PE, we have been playing with beanbags and learning how to throw and catch using 1 hand and 2 hands. We loved throwing the beanbags into hoops and we had great fun playing the bean game. We think the best bean action to do is the baked bean one!!
We met a man called Paddy this morning. He brought all kinds of cool things to school with him! He told us all about woodlice, where they live and what they like to eat. He showed us a dinosaur egg that he had made. Mammy dinosaurs don’t sit on their eggs because they are too big and they could break them. We met a fox and we saw millipedes and a butterfly cocoon. Paddy told us that we are mammals because we have hair and have warm blood. We saw so many things and we learned so much from Paddy. We can’t wait to go to the park with teacher to see if we can find interesting things!!

This week we learned the Breakfast rhyme and 'Yum, yum, Is maith liom!' We are very good at saying 'Is maith liom cáca'. We are hoping that Ms. Groome brings in a real cáca on Friday so we can practise our Irish! We painted flowers for our beginning of year mass themed 'Growing and Changing'. From young buds flowers grow.. We learned all about the people working in our local community and we talked about how every child in our class is special and unique and we all have different finger prints. Lots of us have the same colour eyes or hair but we are all different even twins! We are getting ver good at saying our prayers and teacher read us the story of Moses when he was a baby. We are having a great time in school so far!

We love singing and dancing in Junior Infants. We have learned 'Open them, Shut them', 'Lámh, lámh eile' and 'Humpty Dumpty' so far. We love dancing to 'The Grand Old Duke of York' and 'I am the Music Man'.
We had our first dance class with Ms. Butler this week. It was great fun! We danced to music from 'Frozen'. We made Humpty Dumpty's on Wednesday. We had to do lots of cutting and sticking. Our hands were really sticky afterwards!
We are learning all about Matching in Maths and we really enjoy matching activities on the Interactive whiteboard. In Irish, our new phrase is 'Is maith liom....' We find it really funny when teacher says 'Feicim'!!
When we want to go to the toilet we have to use a toilet pass. Ms. Groome says this is because she doesn't want to loose any of us! We are still learning each others names and we play a game called 'Aye sir, Captain Sir' to help us out. We love playing 'Duck, Duck Goose'.
We have started school!
Pictured below are our new Junior Infants busy at work! They have settled into St. Joseph's so well. Well done all!!
